Emancipation told them they were free. The ledger said otherwise. A family's road out of Reconstruction Georgia — and the long way to a freedom that's truly theirs.

The Far Shore grew out of the eight-generation family tree Spencer and his sister traced, with roots running through South Carolina, Virginia, and Florida, north to Philadelphia and New York, and west into Arkansas. Among them: an ancestor documented in the 1820 Census as a free person of color, forty-five years before Emancipation, a discovery that reshaped everything Spencer thought he knew about freedom. The Far Shore is his debut novel, published under his imprint, Crespen House. He lives near Marietta, Georgia.
